Unsere letzten Tage auf der Südinsel haben wir in Picton verbracht, wo auch das Abenteuer gestartet hat. Alina und ich haben beschlossen Kajak zu fahren und Conny hat eine Weintour gemacht. Beim Kajak-verleih haben wir zuerst eine kurze Einweisung bekommen, wie die Kajaks funktionieren. Das Kajak war ein Luxus-Kajak und nicht vergleichbar mit den Kajaks in Fiji. Das Kajak hatte am Hintersitz Fußpedale, mit denen man es steuern konnte. Außerdem haben wir wasserfeste Bodies bekommen, bei denen man die eine Hälfte überzieht und die andere über das Kajak macht, um trockene Beine zu behalten. Als wir los gepaddelt sind, war sehr viel los auf dem Wasser, kleine Boote, andere Kajaks und die großen Fähren waren unterwegs. Wir mussten den Sound einmal von der einen Seite zu der anderen überqueren und dabei aufpassen, dass wir nicht von einer Fähre überfahren wurden. Wir sind mit unserem Kajak durch den Marlboro Sound gepaddelt, der sehr schön aussieht. Wir haben in einer kleinen Bucht gehalten und gepicknickt. Auf dem Weg zurück ans Ufer hatten wir allerdings so viel Gegenwind, dass wir zu spät ankamen.
Am Abend wollten wir eigentlich den Sonnenuntergang über den Marlboro Sound anschauen, aber wir sind zu spät los gefahren und so konnten wir nur Picton bei Nacht anschauen und wie die Fähren angelegt haben. Am nächsten morgen sind wir mit der Fähre wieder zurück nach Wellington gefahren, um dort das neue Jahr zu beginnen.
Our last days on the South Island we spent in Picton where our South Island adventure started. Alina and I decided to go kayaking and Conny did a wine tour. When we arrived at the kayak shop we first got a short briefing how the kayak works. The kayak was a luxury kayak, you couldn't compare it to those we had in Fiji. The kayak had a paddle at the back and the person who was sitting at the back could regulate it with the feet and so one could decide easily in which direction you want to go. We got as well waterproof body which you put half over you and the other half over the kayak and so you stay dry at the legs. When we started our kayak tour was a lot of traffic on the sea, small boats, other kayaks and the big ferries. We had to cross the sound from one side to the other and so we had to look that we didn't get overrun by a ferry.
We paddled through the Marlboro Sound which looks beautiful. After we found a small bay we had a picnic. On the way back we really had to fight against the wind and finally we arrived late back at the shop.
In the evening we wanted to see the sun going down over the Marlboro Sound but we were late and so we just saw Picton at night and how the ferries get there. The next morning we went back with the ferry to Wellington where we started the New Year.
