Stuck in the sand

In Neuseeland kann man auf die viele Strände mit dem Auto drauf fahren. Allerdings ist meistens Vierradantrieb empfohlen. Unser Auto Carlchen hat keinen Vierradantrieb, trotzdem wollten wir es ausprobieren mit dem Auto auf dem Strand zu fahren (wir hatten es auch davor schon einmal gemacht). Am Anfang hat auch alles wunderbar geklappt, wir sind auf dem festen Sand entlang gedüst bis wir auf die Idee kamen anzuhalten und zwar bei den Felsklippen auf dem Strand. Allerdings war dort der Sand nicht mehr fest und nach kurzer Zeit hatten wir unsere Entscheidung auch bereut. Wir sind im Sand steckengeblieben und kamen nicht mehr vom Fleck. Zwei Familien haben uns sofort gesehen und sind uns zur Hilfe geeilt. Zum einen war das ein bisschen peinlich, aber dafür waren wir schnell wieder aus dem Sand befreit. Für uns war dies dann erstmal die letzte Strandfahrt.

In New Zeland you can drive in a lot of places with the car on the beach. But mostly four wheel drive is recommended. Our car Carlchen has no four wheel drive but we wanted to try to drive there anyway (we already drove on another beach before). At the beginning everything was fine and we drove on the hard sand till we had the idea to stop near the cliffs. The sand there was loose and after a short time we regret the decision. We got stuck in the sand. Two families saw us and came to help us. This was a little bit awkward but we were quick out of the sand again.

Unser nächster Stopp waren die Kai Iwi Lakes. Das sind Seen, die sehr schön sind. Dort gibt es weißen Sandstrand und das Wasser ist so klar. Am See ist direkt ein Campingplatz auf dem viele Kiwis ihre Ferien verbringen. Wasserski, Jetski und Bootfahren sind dort sehr beliebt. Wir haben dort eine Erdbeeren-Essenspause gemacht, da wir am Tag zuvor auf einem Erdbeerfeld Erdbeeren gepflückt haben.

Our next stop were the Kai Iwi Lakes. The lakes are very beautiful. There is a white sandy beach and the water is so clear. Directly at the lake is a camping ground where a lot of Kiwis spent their holidays. A lot of people do waterskiing, driving a boat or Jetski. We stopped there to do a strawberry break. On the day before we went to a strawberry field to pick up some strawberries. 

The Four Sisters, Tane Mahuta, Te Matua Ngahere - das sind alles Kauribäume im Waipoura Forest. Kauribäume sind die größte heimische Baumart in Neuseeland. Sie werden von 30 bis 50 Meter groß und einen Stammdurchmesser von 1 bis 4 Meter. Der größte Kauribaum ist der Tane Mahuta. Er wird 1500 Jahre geschätzt, hat eine Größe von 51,2 Meter und einen Umfang 13,77 Meter. Er wird auch "Gott des Waldes" genannt. Der zweitgrößte ist der Te Matua Ngahere, der auch der "Vater das Waldes" genannt wird. Dann gibt es noch vier Kauribäume, die im Kreis angeordnet sind. Diese werden "Die vier Schwestern" genannt. Die Bäume sehen sehr beeindruckend aus und das wohl größte Problem war, den ganzen Baum auf ein Foto zu bekommen.

The Four Sisters, Tane Mahuta, Te Matua Ngahere - this are some Kauri trees in the Waipoura Forest. Kauri trees are the largest tree species in New Zealand. They get from 30 to 50 meters tall and from 1 to 4 meters trunk diameter. The tallest living Kauri tree is Tane Mahuta. People estimate that it is about 1500 years old. The tree is 51,2 meters tall and a rage of 13,77 meters. Another name for it it is "Lord of the Forest". The secound tallest is Te Matua Ngahere which is the "Father of the forest". The Four Sisters are four Kauri trees which are standing in a circle. The trees are impressive and the biggest problem was to get the whole tree on one picture.

Vom Wald auf die Sanddüne. Am nächsten Tag sind wir noch weiter in den Norden gefahren, um uns den Ninety Miles Beach anzuschauen und Sandsurfen zu machen. Der Ninety Miles Beach war nicht so spektakulär, wie wir ihn uns vorgestellt haben. Es war einfach ein langer Strand. Außerdem muss man sagen, dass der Ninety Miles Beach nicht wirklich 90 Meilen lang ist, sondern nur 55 Meilen (88 Kilometer). Danach sind wir zur Sanddüne gefahren. Dort haben wir uns ein Board ausgeliehen, um die Sanddüne runterzurutschen. Das hat richtig viel Spaß gemacht, aber war auch sehr anstrengend, weil man die Sanddüne auch immer wieder hochlaufen musste. Danach war auch alles voller Sand und wie ich gemerkt habe, wäre es schlau gewesen dem Mund beim heruntersurfen zuzumachen. Es hat etwas gedauert, um den Sandgeschmack wieder aus dem Mund zu bekommen.

 From the forest to the sand dune. On the next day we went up far north to see the 90 Miles Beach and to do sandsurfing. The Nienty Miles Beach was not that spectacular as we imagined. It was just a very long beach. In addition the Ninety Miles Beach is not really 90 Miles long, it is only 55 Miles (88 kilometer). Then we went to the sand dune. We borrowed some boards to go down the sand dune which was very funny but exhausting at the same time because you always had to run up the sand dune again. After it everything was full of sand, I found out that you better should close your mouth when you go down. It took some time to get the sandy taste out of my mouth.
